Maersk Line Wins Supply Chain Sustainability Award At The GPCA Conference
On May 4, 2016, Maersk Line was recognised for Supply Chain Sustainability during the first Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) Supply Chain Excellence Awards.
Maersk Line bagged the award in the Sustainability category for signing the Carbon Pact with Borouge, an innovative petrochemical company based in the UAE. The Carbon Pact signifies the two companies’ commitment in creating transparency on the environmental impact of Borouge’s supply chain and reducing Borouge’s CO2 emissions from its ocean transportation with Maersk Line by 15 percent from 2016 to 2020.
“As it reflects our commitment to improve the sustainability performance and strengthen our environmental stewardship, the Carbon Pact helps Borouge to significantly reduce the CO2 emissions from transportation of our products and yet contribute to the growth targets set for our business,” says Ahmed Al Shamsi, Borouge’s Senior Vice President – Supply Chain Management.
The first Carbon Pact signed in the Middle East
Maersk Line’s Carbon Pact with Borouge is the first sustainability agreement signed in the Middle East, making the GPCA Supply Chain Sustainability award truly an honour for Maersk Line.
“We are proud to receive the GPCA Sustainability award for the first Carbon Pact signed in the Middle East. Borouge and Maersk Line have jointly committed to grow our business in a way which continuously reduces the impact on the environment. While this will be no easy task, it just makes good sense – for our business, our customers and importantly for the future of our planet,” says Christian Juul-Nyholm, Managing Director of Maersk Line UAE, Oman and Qatar.
Christian Juul-Nyholm also stresses Maersk Line’s dedication to raise the bar in addressing the environmental impact of international shipping: “Sustainability is much more than a buzz word for Maersk Line. While container transportation is one of the most efficient means of transporting goods across the globe, we still have a carbon footprint that we wish to address. To facilitate sustainable, profitable growth in global trade we work hard both internally and in partnership with our customers to minimise our footprint. This is good for the environment and also good for our respective businesses.”
